PRESS BEHIND BARS

An alarming number of journalists world wide are paying a high price for spreading the free word: Long-term imprisonment.

The figure has increased more than 20 percent just this past year. Nearly 200 members of the press in 25 countries are now incarcerated. The message is clear: Authoritarian governments will not tolerate independent voices. The free word is no longer free.

In this documentary we meet the members of the press who suffer from their government’s rage. For the first time we hear their stories told behind bars. Who are they? What did they try to reveal? And in the end, has it been worth it?
